Pérdika
Pérdika is a 1998 Amel Super Maramu, a 53-foot ketch built in France and designed by Henry Amel. This boat was specifically created as a bluewater cruiser, ideal for a couple to sail around the world in safety and comfort.
Why did we choose an Amel Super Maramu?
For us it's all about her style, safety and comfort. She has a classic timeless elegance - so much so that when I first saw one in a quaint Greek harbour in 2021, it was love at first sight. From that moment on, no other boat even came close.
Amel owners share a deep appreciation for these legendary yachts. If you're curious about why Amels have such a devoted following, read more about their cult status here: The Cult of the Amel.
The Super Maramu was designed with serious safety in mind. She has five watertight compartments and two interior watertight bulkheads, ensuring that if one part of the hull is breached, the water stays contained, and the boat stays afloat. She also has a protected centre cockpit keeping us sheltered from the wind and waves, a solid hull design for strength and durability, electric winches for effortless sail handling, and a ketch rigg making it easier for either of us to manage sails in various weather conditions.
Beyond safety, Pérdika is equipped with features that make life on board comfortable and convenient. She has a standard-size washing machine, a dishwasher, three fridge/freezers ensuring we can provision for weeks at a time, a watermaker that turns seawater into drinking water, air conditioning/heating and there's a generator to keep everything running if the 1,800 watts of solar and the boat batteries can't keep up. All of this makes her a true go anywhere boat - and the perfect choice for our adventure.
Why call her Pérdika?
When we bought her in Portugal in March 2021, she was called Lady Annila, but we wanted a name that actually meant something to us.
Since Robin wasn't too keen on naming her after our cat (and really, why not Colin-Kipper?) we settled on Pérdika - it's the name of the first harbour we ever sailed into in Greece on our own boat - a 35-foot Hanse, back in 2019. It's the perfect tribute to where our yacht sailing journey began.
