Our Sailing Odyssey Begins - Westward Ho!
After several years of planning and preparation, our six-year voyage aboard Pérdika is finally underway.
Leaving our home port, Lakki Marina, Leros
We’ve now sailed just over 400 nautical miles and are gradually settling into life at sea — adapting to its pace, its unpredictability, and our ever changing landscape. So far we're happy to report, Pérdika is proving herself both capable and comfortable.
The five weeks spent in the boatyard before launching was intense but productive. Long days of labour paid off with essential upgrades and the completion of our new dinghy, Poulàki. With Pérdika back in the water and ready to go, we began our journey through the Aegean and into the heart of the Peloponnese.
Since casting off, we’ve welcomed three sets of friends aboard and taken a short detour to Mallorca for the wedding of close friends. It’s been a dynamic start — marked by shifting weather, changing scenery, and the steady rhythm of life under sail.
Our first leg included:
– A lively, wind-filled week sailing with Clare through the Dodecanese and Cyclades. Well done Clare, those were some bumpy passages we took you on!
– Two calm and restorative weeks with Anna and Simon exploring the Eastern Peloponnese.
Litter picking, Valanidia beach
– A beautifully hosted wedding in Mallorca, offering a brief and glamorous contrast to our briny life afloat.
Finca Son Mir, Palma, Mallorca
Lastly, a few stunning days with Ella and Elliot, tracing the rugged coastline of the Mani Peninsula, enjoying dolphins surfing our bow wave and swimming with loggerhead turtles in Limeni bay.
As we sailed past the imposing Taygetos mountains of the Mani Peninsula, I was rereading 'Mani' by Patrick Leigh Fermor. His vivid stories of the fiercely independent Maniots—their feuds, traditions, and fierce pride—brought the dramatic coastline to life. Two years ago, we toured this area by car, tracing Fermor’s footsteps on land, and fell in love with the Mani—the landscape, its bays, and its people. Reading his words now, from the sea, made the experience even more vivid.
Spot Pouláki in amongst her Greek friends
We are preparing for our final week in Greece, sailing west from Kalamata to Pylos with our friends Phil and Naomi aboard. From there, we’ll provision and plan our first significant crossing — a 2–3 day passage across the Ionian Sea to Taormina, Sicily.

Love your wedding attire! A nod to the sea with your fishy frock! ❤️
Ha ha, yes! Well spotted! You can take the girl out of the sea…
Hi, the dress comment was from me, didn’t mean to be anonymous! Love reading your travel log, take care!! Juliet xx
Hi Juliet Sorry for the long delay in replying. Just as well you confirmed it was you, I was wondering if I had a secret admired 🤔😝xx
This all sounds fabulously idyllic! Your adventure is putting all of our lives in the shade. Keep enjoying yourselves and keep the updates coming, we love them. Stay safe.
Hey guys Sorry for the delayed reply, much has happened since then! Including of course enjoying your lovely Cosmo cocktail gifts on our last night in Greece (the martinis are being saved for another special occasion). Thanks for the video message - Mr D’s sozzled face had us laughing our Flip flops off! Very funny! Sending you both much much love. Rachael xx
All looks and sounds wonderful. Great to be able to enjoy your travels on board from the comfort of my sofa. And my didn't you both scrub up well for the wedding! Duncan has just headed off with Simon to sail Sira from Grimsby over to the Netherlands. Meanwhile Annie and I are keeping the NHS going! Looking forward to a week's sailing with Simon & Annie end of July. Happy Days! 😊 Lots of love to you both. A xx
Hi Ali Thanks for your message and sorry for the delay in replying. The longer we are away, the more we find that hearing from friends at home brings us much joy and pleasure 😚. Wishing you both fair winds and enjoyable sailing in the NL. When we sailed there a few years ago, after getting used to the fact that no mountains popped up on the horizon we came to enjoy the Dutch vibe. You might even brave tasting soused herring like Robin did 🤢! Sending you both much love. Rachael xx
You’ll love Taormina though the anchorage can be roll unless you take a buoy ( pricey !) . Seem to remember that the most NW buoys were the quietest . That was 10 years ago . The guy who owned the buoys complained that the mafia who granted his lease were more honest than the civil servants who replaced them .
Hi Ian Apologies for the delayed reply. It was indeed rolly! We anchored, but Georgio the buoy guy’s empire is slowly growing. We stayed 4 nights and got into the rhythm of the rolling, which built by late afternoon during the L&V winds we encountered and died off to a soft roll overnight. So far in Sicily and the Aeolean Islands we haven’t anchored where there’s been no swell. Xx
Fabulous photos Rachael (both of you looking very glamorous in Mallorca … did you pack your one posh frock and shoes especially?). You’re making me want to book my next holiday to Greece. It’s lovely reading about your adventures and following you on the map. You were so lucky to see the turtles. We saw some enormous ones in Crete. Enjoy and safe onward travels! Xx
Hi Gail Always good to hear from you. Good question! No glam frocks or shoes aboard sadly, but the mother of the groom very kindly bought out our wedding attire and took it back again. We have not left Greece as you’ve probably noticed and are sailing the Aeolean Islands in Sicily - it’s taken us a good week to adjust to life away from Greece, to its beauty and familiarity. Yes, what luck with the turtles. We have had many sightings around the Peloponnese coast to date, and all the big loggerhead variety. Seeing sea mammals always feels like a rare treat and is a joy to experience. Lots of love, Rxx
A gorgeous read as always. Missing boat life. You converted me despite the windy week. Have fun in Taormina it’s gorgeous. The gelato is amazing as I recall. Lots of love. Clare
Hey sweetie Apologies for my delayed reply. Of all our boat guests your week weather-wise was the most challenging by far! You really were a trouper and a joy to have aboard. We’re very happy knowing it’s deepened rather than diminished your love of sailing 💕 Big hugs, R xx
Looks absolutely amazing Rachael definitely living the dream. Stay safe and enjoy every moment x
Hi Gill So lovely to hear from you! Sorry for my delayed response, we’ve had a stream of boat guests then little stable internet connection for a while. So pleased you’re following us and commenting here, it’s surprising how meaningful it is to hear from friends at home now we’re living overseas. I hope you’re keeping well and staying active. Lots of love. Rxx
